"And if I sewed my precious Japanese papers, what would happen? And what if I not only sewed, but also added reliefs and textures? And if instead of thread I used elastic? What if I created such a great flexibility that they could transform into another kind of surface, another kind of material?"
The Estrelar collection's lamps were created from experiments with light-diffusing surfaces, which fused Japanese paper and fabric together through stitching. The idea of deconstructing and subverting the use of paper was the driving force behind this exploration. They are tactile lamps, transmuting paper - usually a flat, inflexible surface - into fabric and movement.
The resulting texture was so striking that the shapes needed to be very simple and also very rounded. Its tactile quality, besides evoking comfort and coziness, produced a calming, soft light filter.
Designed originally for Design Weekend, for By Kamy's DNA TEXTIL show, they had underneath the weave "led stars" hidden, bringing, in addition to the central light, the surprise of little light points on the surface of the lamp.
